Young voices of Moldova: why youth and EU integration should shape Moldova’s future today

I grew up hearing the same sentence over and over again: “If you want a better future, you have to leave.”

For many young people in Moldova, this isn’t just an idea. It’s a plan. A quiet expectation. Something almost inevitable. And for a long time, I believed it too.

But at some point, I started asking myself a different question: “What if we can build the future we are searching for abroad at home?”

For me, the European Union is not just about politics, institutions, or complex negotiations. It is about something much more personal. It is about whether I, as a young person, will have the environment to dream, grow, and succeed without feeling that I have to leave my past life behind.

Too often, we discuss EU enlargement in technical language: reforms, benchmarks, negotiations. But behind all of this, there are real people. There are students who want access to better education, young leaders who want to make a difference in their communities, and entire generations who are trying to believe that their future can be built at home – not somewhere else.

Being involved in youth initiatives and leadership roles, I have seen the power of young people in reality. I have seen how powerful young voices can be when they are actually heard and given a space to speak, lead, and contribute. I have met young people from rural villages, small towns, and big cities who all share the same desire: to feel that their effort matters. We don’t just participate, we bring ideas, energy, and change.

And that is exactly why EU enlargement matters.

The EU perspective helps to create an environment where young people are encouraged to stay engaged, innovate, and believe that their work is part of a bigger transformation. Moreover, European integration gives young people a sense of direction. It shows us that our country is moving towards a future guided by the values we believe in – democracy, justice, and respect for human dignity.

Of course, the journey to integration is not easy. There are challenges, scepticism, and slow processes that can be frustrating. But every step matters. Every reform, every community initiative, every youth project pushes us closer to the country we want to live in. And each of us has a role in this progress. We are not passive observers. We are contributors, builders, and storytellers of a new Moldova.

This is why I choose to stay involved. Because staying is not just a personal decision – it is a statement. A statement that our home deserves the same chances as any other European country. A statement that change is possible when people believe in it. And a statement that my generation is not defined by the desire to leave, but by the courage to build. My experience in the Young European Ambassadors (YEAs) initiative showcases the active engagement of young people, as I organised local discussions, worked on promoting EU values, and connected with young people from different countries. I also contributed to projects in my school community, where we created spaces for students to share ideas and develop skills. These experiences showed me that youth are not waiting for change – we are already creating it. This is what EU integration means to me: real opportunities, real involvement, and a real chance to build our future at home.

The future of European integration isn’t only about formal negotiations; it is an ongoing process shaped in classrooms, youth projects, and communities like mine, because the European Union is not just geography. It is a shared vision. It is about expanding hope. It is about giving countries like Moldova a real chance, not just to join the European Union, but truly to belong in it.

And for my generation, that shared vision is simple: we want opportunities to develop our skills, we want stability, and we want to be a part of integration, staying engaged and encouraged.

We often hear that we are the future. But the truth is, we are already a part of the present. We are already shaping conversations, building communities, and pushing for change. So maybe the question is no longer whether the European Union is ready to enlarge.

Maybe the real question is: “Is the European Union ready to believe in us?” Because we are ready to build the present. Right here, at home.
