WHAT IS
RENEWABLE ENERGY?
Natural sources, such as water, sun and wind, are constantly renewed even if we use them to generate energy to power our homes and cities. This is why we call them renewable energy.
How do wind, sun and water generate energy?
Wind energy
The wind naturally produces energy. The force of the wind can be powerful, and a natural source for us to use. This energy is generated by wind turbines.
A power station is a group of wind turbines in the same location. These are also known as wind farms.
Sun energy
Sun energy is also known as solar energy. Solar panels convert the sun's energy into electricity. This can be used to power anything, and stored in batteries for later.
Solar collectors also transform the Sun’s energy. These turn energy into heat instead of electricity.
Water energy
Water energy is also known as 'hydro' energy. The force of water currents can generate electricity, which can power homes or entire communities.
A small hydropower plant produces up to 100 KW of electricity by using flowing streams or water flow.
