Becoming an alumna of the EU-funded Mundus Journalism (https://mundusjournalism.com/) programme has been a transformative experience, extending far beyond academia. This unique programme, which allows students to study journalism in more than two different countries, broadened my perspectives and enriched my career in ways I hadn’t anticipated.
This blog post is for those who have been searching for a Master’s Degree programme which includes both academia and practice, while giving us travelling across Europe!
The programme experience
The Mundus Journalism programme is an Erasmus Mundus-funded initiative that brings together journalists and communication specialists from across the globe to explore the evolving media landscape. My journey began in Denmark at Aarhus University, where I was immersed in critical thinking and engaging discussions about the media’s role in society. I then moved to the Czech Republic, where I specialised in Totalitarianism and Transition, gaining insights into how media can function as both a tool for democracy and a mechanism for control.
Studying in two countries
Studying in Denmark and the Czech Republic exposed me to two distinct educational systems. Denmark’s approach encouraged open dialogue and questioning of norms, while the Czech experience, shaped by its post-totalitarian history, offered a deeper understanding of the media’s impact on collective memory and national identity.
But keep that in mind that Mundus Journalism has four different specialisations: London (Crisis & Conflict), Amsterdam (Politics & Communication), Prague (Totalitarianism & Transition) and Munich (Cultures & Contexts).
One of the greatest strengths of the programme was the diversity of the students. I learnt as much from my classmates — seasoned professionals from across the globe — as I did from my lecturers. Their experiences enriched our discussions and helped me to appreciate journalism through different cultural lenses.
How to apply
For those considering applying to the Mundus Journalism programme, applications typically open from 1 November until 10 January. It’s competitive, requiring a strong portfolio and academic credentials, but it’s truly worth it. For more details, visit the official application page.
Reflecting on my time in the programme, I can confidently say that Mundus Journalism not only equipped me to tackle the challenges of modern media but also helped me develop a global perspective that continues to shape my work. I highly recommend this programme to anyone passionate about journalism and eager to expand their horizons.
