Political Engagement of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Georgia – Reality, Challenges, and Standards

The report “Political Engagement of IDPs in Georgia – Realities, Challenges, and Standards”, prepared by the Social Justice Center, explores the political engagement of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Georgia. From a gender perspective, the analysis reveals that displaced women and girls face distinct and significant challenges that limit their political participation and engagement in public life. Women—especially those who are displaced—are often subject to traditional gender roles and societal expectations that constrain their ability to engage politically. Pervasive gender stereotypes and family obligations frequently hinder their involvement in decision-making processes. Additionally, displaced women frequently lack access to adequate economic resources and legal support, further restricting their political agency. Barriers such as the absence of personal documentation and unstable living conditions compound these difficulties. Although women constitute the majority of voters in Georgia, their representation in political positions remains low. This underrepresentation is particularly evident among displaced women, who are seldom included in political parties or decision-making bodies. The findings underscore the need for targeted interventions and inclusive policies that address the structural, cultural, and socio-economic barriers limiting the political participation of displaced women in Georgia.
