The report “Men, Women, and Gender Relations in Georgia: Public Perceptions and Attitudes (2024)” offers a comprehensive overview of societal views on gender roles, equality, and related socio-cultural norms in Georgia. Developed by the Institute of Social Studies and Analysis (ISSA) under the UN Joint Programme for Gender Equality, the study is based on the International Men and Gender Equality Survey (IMAGES), comparing data across 2013, 2019, and 2024. Findings reveal a mix of progress and persistence of traditional norms. While general support for gender equality exists, substantial disparities remain in household labour, decision-making, childcare, and leadership perceptions. Notably, 58% believe men make better political leaders, with women’s support for male leadership increasing. Although acceptance of women’s employment and education has grown, gendered divisions in unpaid labour and child-rearing are still widespread. The report also addresses issues of violence, sexuality, reproductive health, and legal awareness. Alarmingly, conservative attitudes toward intimate partner violence and homophobia remain prevalent, though slightly improved since prior surveys. While knowledge of gender equality laws is moderate, awareness of paternity leave rights is limited. Overall, the report underscores the critical need for sustained awareness, policy reinforcement, and educational efforts to foster transformative gender norms in Georgia.
