Young Moldovans experience the European Parliament’s inner working with Model European Union

Eighty young people from all over Moldova have taken part in the European Parliament simulation initiative – Model EU Moldova. The event took place from 12 to 14 April in Chisinau, at the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova.

Young European Ambassadors (YEAs), representing the youth initiative for the Eastern Partner countries launched by the EU NEIGHBOURS east programme, also took part in the event.

Through three days of masterclasses, debates, talks and the final vote, the participants learnt what it means to be a member of the European Parliament and to make decisions at the level of the European Union. They attended information sessions, studied real legislative proposals, proposed amendments and voted in favour of laws.

The participants also had the opportunity to exchange with the President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, the Speaker of Parliament Igor Grosu, the EU Ambassador in Chisinau, Jānis Mažeiks, and the Deputy Head of the German Embassy in Moldova, Peter Buschmann.

Model EU is organised within the ‘EU4Youth: Youth Engagement and Empowerment’ programme, implemented by the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), in collaboration with the EU NEIGHBOURS east programme, the National Youth Council of Moldova and Europe Café, with the financial support of the European Union and the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development of Germany.

Model EU takes place within the context of the European Year of Skills and in conjunction with the European Youth Week 2024 on 12-19 April, organised by the European Commission every second year to celebrate and promote youth engagement, participation and active citizenship all over Europe and beyond.
