“Moldova’s progress on its EU path is remarkable,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has told Moldovan President Maia Sandu. Von der Leyen met Sandu together with President of the European Council Antonio Costa in Nicosia, on the margins of the Opening Ceremony of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2026.
Von der Leyen pointed out in her post on X that Moldova had just joined the Single Euro Payments Area and the EU’s roaming scheme.
“Today in Nicosia, we continue to work together on the next steps towards EU accession. Making sure all Moldovans will benefit,” said von der Leyen.
The Republic of Moldova, together with Ukraine, joined the EU ‘Roam Like at Home’ area on 1 January 2026.
Earlier, in October 2025, banks from Moldova officially joined the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) schemes.
