Moldova presentation of preliminary results of 2024 census, supported by EU

The population of the Republic of Moldova stands at around 2.4 million people (52.9 per cent women and 47.1 per cent men), according to the preliminary results of the Population and Housing Census 2024, conducted from last April-July with the support of the European Union.

The data were presented to the public on 30 January, at an event organised by the National Bureau of Statistics with the support of the Government of the Republic of Moldova and development partners, including the Delegation of the European Union and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

The preliminary results cover data on population size and structure by sex, major age groups, place of residence, and country of birth, and the distribution of the population by development regions and ethno-cultural characteristics (ethnicity, religion, mother tongue, usual spoken language, and difficulties in daily activities).

Jānis Mažeiks, Ambassador of the European Union to the Republic of Moldova, said the EU would continue its support to strengthen the capacity of the National Bureau of Statistics.  This data plays a vital role in shaping public policies that genuinely benefit citizens, whether in infrastructure, healthcare, public transportation, or other key areas,” the Ambassador said. “Furthermore, a high-quality census is a valuable tool for preventing corruption and ensuring democratic processes at both local and national levels.”

The final summarised results are expected to be published within 12 months after the census, while the detailed final results, including breakdowns by age group, sex, locality, etc., will be available and published within 18 months after the census completion.
