On 22 and 23 January, the European Union Support Centre for Internal Security and Border Management (the EU Security Hub) convened in Chișinău, Moldova, for its 14th edition.
This edition brought together national and international experts, representatives of the Republic of Moldova’s authorities, European institutions, EU Member States, and EU agencies to discuss the safeguarding of democratic values in the electoral context.
Participants analysed recent experiences related to electoral processes and discussed patterns of external interference, identified vulnerabilities, and ways in which institutions can respond in a professional and coordinated manner to increasingly sophisticated risks.
“The Republic of Moldova is approaching a decisive stage in its European path,” said Daniella Misail-Nichitin, Minister of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Moldova. “The Security Hub is part of this preparation. It directly contributes to aligning our country with European standards in the fields of internal security, the rule of law, and the protection of fundamental values.”
“The hybrid threats facing the Republic of Moldova are serious and persistent. Equally strong, however, is the determination of its institutions and citizens to defend democratic values,” said Iwona Piórko, European Union Ambassador to the Republic of Moldova. “The European Union will continue to stand by the Republic of Moldova—supporting reforms, strengthening resilience, and defending the principle that a country’s future must be decided freely and fairly by its own citizens.”
The event is co-organised by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Moldova, the European Commission through the Directorate-General for Migration and Home Affairs (DG HOME), and the European Union Partnership Mission in the Republic of Moldova (EUPM).
