Maia Sandu meets top EU officials in Brussels

On 10 and 11 December, Moldovan President Maia Sandu met the President of the European Council Antonio Costa, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, and European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Cos in Brussels.

“Maia Sandu is fighting with her heart and soul for Moldova’s European future. We are fully by your side,” Ursula von der Leyen wrote in X after their meeting on 10 December. “Today we tabled €50 million to support reforms and economic stability. We also look forward to opening a pivotal cluster of accession negotiations in 2025.”

In another post, von der Leyen said that Moldova is committed to reforming its justice system on its path to the EU. “Evaluating the integrity of judges and prosecutors is essential to ensuring the rule of law. We discussed a roadmap to accelerate the vetting of judges and increased EU support for this to €10 million,” von der Leyen said.

“The people of Moldova are committed to European integration, just as we are committed to supporting the country’s resilience, stability, and reforms,” Antonio Costa wrote on X after the meeting on Wednesday evening. “Ready to continue working together towards this shared goal.”

Marta Cos praised Sandu’s efforts to open the first EU accession cluster in 2025. “Fighting undemocratic forces with democratic means is a titanic effort! EU integration will help secure peace, freedom and prosperity for Moldovan people,” Cos wrote on X on Wednesday evening.
