On 4 July, ahead of the EU-Moldova Summit, President Maia Sandu welcomed a group of journalists at the Presidency building in Chisinau, as part of an EU NEIGHBOURS East press trip.
During the meeting, President Sandu discussed Moldova’s upcoming parliamentary elections, EU accession goals, cooperation with Ukraine, efforts to counter Russian influence, relations with Romania, and energy security.
The President reaffirmed Moldova’s aspiration to join the EU: “We will do our best. We’ve been working very hard, and in the last three years, we have proven that we have both the technical capacity and the political will. We hope this strong political will continues after the parliamentary elections.”
She added: “I am optimistic. The majority of Moldovans want Moldova to become part of the EU, and most see the opportunity that we have now.”
President Sandu also confirmed continued cooperation with Ukraine and praised the support provided by the EU and its Member States.
“Moldova’s security is defended by Ukraine. Moldova’s freedom and peace are defended by Ukraine. We are very grateful for that, and we are grateful to the countries that have been supporting Ukraine. We believe Ukraine needs even more support,” Sandu said.
Earlier, the journalists met with the EU Ambassador to Moldova and visited EU-funded projects that support Moldovan SMEs and implement energy efficiency renovations in vulnerable households.
