European Justice Commissioner Michael McGrath visits Moldova

European Commissioner for Democracy, Justice, Rule of Law and Consumer Protection Michael McGrath will pay an official visit to Chisinau on 26–27 March 2026. The Commissioner will be accompanied by representatives of the European Commission, including Ana Gallego Torres, Director-General for Justice and Consumers (DG JUST).

The agenda of the Commissioner began with a meeting with the judges of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Moldova. He also met with representatives of key institutions in the justice sector, including the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) and the Superior Council of Magistracy. Discussions focused on reforms in the justice sector.

McGrath also met representatives of civil society. “The exchange of views highlighted the important role of civil society organisations in strengthening democracy and supporting reforms. It also underlined their contribution to advancing the reform process and the Republic of Moldova’s European path, through active engagement and continuous dialogue with public institutions,” the EU Delegation to Moldova posted on X.

Today, in discussions with members of the Vetting Commission, Commissioner Michael McGrath said that the full implementation of the EU acquis could only be ensured by guaranteeing objective and impartial justice, with a corruption-free judicial system. At the same time, he highlighted that the vetting process is an essential condition for advancing the Republic of Moldova’s European path.

Today’s agenda also includes meetings with President Maia Sandu, Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu, Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Cristina Gherasimov, and members of Parliament.
