Borrell meets Moldovan counterpart to discuss energy security, defence, and reforms

EU High Representative Josep Borrell met with Moldovan Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and European Integration Nicu Popescu in Brussels on 13 October.

They discussed the impact of Russian aggression against Ukraine, in particular on Moldova’s energy security, and Moldova’s reform agenda on its European path. The sides also discussed ways to further strengthen security and defence cooperation.

The EU High Representative reiterated the EU’s unwavering support for Moldova’s territorial integrity and sovereignty and condemned the violation of Moldovan airspace by Russian missiles which were used to attack civilian targets and civilian infrastructure in Ukraine.

In the context of Moldova’s EU candidate status, Borrell welcomed the Moldovan government’s continued commitment to reforms and stressed the importance of reforms in the justice and anti-corruption sectors.
