If the world were water on our planet, an interconnected sea of nations, then Moldova would be a wave full of potential. Waves do not exist in isolation; they gain strength from the currents around them, much like Moldova finds momentum through international cooperation. An ocean is vast and complete, enriched by various elements – much like the European Union, where aspiring members receive support, provided that they foster independent development and meet the necessary criteria to become part of this greater whole.
In this way, Moldova’s wave has the chance to merge with the ocean, growing stronger within it while retaining its own unique force. Just as waves are shaped by the forces around them, winds, tides, and currents, Moldova, too, is shaped by the international opportunities that push it forward. Through my own experiences abroad, I’ve seen how cultural exchange, education, and cooperation can strengthen Moldova’s path, helping it rise with the tide rather than drift alone.
This is how I see Moldova, not just today, but throughout my entire journey of exploring different cultures, countries, and systems. Before Erasmus, I saw only one side of Moldova, one that seemed weighed down by challenges, slow to change. But that perception was only my own limitation. The moment I expanded my horizons, of consciousness, opportunities, and countries, I realised that things could be entirely different.
First and foremost, my experience with European exchange programmes taught me to view the world through the lens of opportunities. When you possess skills, knowledge, and the determination to succeed, you can reach goal after goal. Of course, I quickly noticed that EU countries enjoy more opportunities and privileges, making their path easier. But an easier path is not always the best one. Facing and overcoming challenges is what strengthens and shapes a person.
New cultures, languages, and the exchange of experiences broaden your worldview and allow you to see your country from a fresh perspective. You start to recognise both its weaknesses and its immense potential. The contrast between different systems highlights what Moldova could become, making it clear that transformation is not just necessary, but possible.
Knowledge of foreign languages remains a valuable skill not just for survival but for a vibrant life full of experiences and emotions. There is a well-known concept that has been attributed to many thinkers, including the Romanian historian, writer, and politician Nicolae Iorga, which states: “The more languages you know, the more lives you live.”
Being multilingual has given me access not only to different perspectives on the culture I find myself in, the historical context, and a country’s development but has also allowed me fully to experience a new life within a new society, seeing the world through a different lens.
Mastering foreign languages opens doors for Moldovan youth to the European educational space, international projects, and professional opportunities. It is not just a tool for communication but a key to integration into the broader European community, where cultural diversity, mobility, and cooperation are highly valued. The more young people become proficient in languages, the easier it is for Moldova to strengthen its ties with the EU, adopt best practices, and build a future based on knowledge and exchange.
I can confirm this from my own experience. My knowledge of foreign languages and my willingness to embrace new opportunities have led me to participate in international projects and gain a deeper understanding of Europe. Frankly, I cannot imagine my life without foreign languages, they accompany me in every aspect of my daily life and, most importantly, continue to open new doors for collaboration with European organisations and for studying at European institutions in their languages, allowing me to absorb all the knowledge they offer.
One of the most significant steps toward European integration is engaging with young people, as they are the ones shaping the country’s future. As a Young European Ambassador, I have witnessed how international initiatives like the YEA network shape a new generation, one that embraces European values, strives for change, and takes responsibility for the future of their country.
This initiative does more than just promote European values, it cultivates active citizenship, democratic engagement, and an openness to collaboration, it transforms the mindset of young people, showing that change begins with every one of us. Every international project, every exchange, every discussion strengthens our ability to bring Moldova closer to Europe, not just in policy, but in mindset.
We learn to be active citizens, to uphold democratic principles, and to foster inclusivity and sustainable development. Every project, every meeting, every international exchange not only helps us grow personally, but also paves the way for Moldova’s European future.
Every person has a dream, and with effort it can become a goal. Moldova, too, has a dream, to shape a stronger, more integrated future. A dream is like a wave; it can crash against the rocks or carry us to a new shore. But waves do not move by themselves. It is essential not just to dream, but to act, to learn, to engage, and to bring European values to life.
For Moldova, this means actively implementing reforms in governance, education, and the economy to align with European standards. It means strengthening democratic institutions, fostering innovation, and ensuring that young people have the tools and opportunities to contribute to this transformation. But policy alone is not enough, real change happens when individuals take the initiative.
That is why Moldova’s youth must continue to participate in international exchanges, advocate for progressive reforms, and apply the best European practices at home. My personal experiences have reshaped my vision of the future, and they have shown me one undeniable truth: every individual has the power to be part of this wave of change. And the more of us who act, the stronger Moldova’s forward path becomes.
