Harmful practice of early/childhood marriage challenges and solutions in Georgia – special report

The Center for Democracy and Governance, in cooperation with the UN Population Fund and the Office of the Public Defender of Georgia, conducted a study with the financial support of Sweden within the framework of the joint UN program “For Gender Equality”. The study assesses the prevalence of the crimes committed with the objective of early marriage, the protection and prevention measures used, and the approaches of relevant specialists. The study analyzes court decisions and criminal cases, relevant statistical data, and the cases in the public defender’s proceedings.

The research examines the policy of state agencies in the process of prevention, elimination and response to early/child marriage, as well as evaluates the actual scale of child marriage, the effectiveness of the protection and assistance measures used, and the effectiveness of justice for crimes committed with the motive of child marriage.
