Ensuring Gender Equality in the Armed Forces of Ukraine: Balancing Family and Professional Duties and Readiness for Fair Distribution of Family Responsibilities

This military-sociological study, conducted by the Research Center for Humanitarian Problems of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, examines the current state of gender equality within the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU). The research focuses on how service members balance family and professional responsibilities and their readiness to equitably share family duties. The study involved surveying military personnel to assess their perspectives on the importance of creating conditions that facilitate the reconciliation of professional and family obligations. It also explored attitudes toward equal rights for men and women in this context, the availability of supportive measures within military units, and the actual distribution of family responsibilities among service members.

Key findings indicate a general acknowledgment among military personnel of the importance of supporting service members in balancing family and professional duties. However, challenges remain in fully implementing these principles, as evidenced by varying perceptions between male and female service members regarding the adequacy of existing support structures and the equitable distribution of family responsibilities. The report concludes with recommendations aimed at enhancing gender equality in the AFU. These include developing policies that promote work-life balance, implementing support mechanisms tailored to the needs of both male and female service members, and fostering a culture that encourages the fair distribution of family duties. Such measures are essential for ensuring the operational effectiveness of the AFU and the well-being of its personnel.
