Winners of 2025 EU Prize for Journalism announced in Tbilisi

On 6 February, the EU Delegation to Georgia announced the winners of the 14th EU Prize for Journalism.

Established by the European Union Delegation to Georgia in 2012, the EU Prize for Journalism encourages professionalism and ethical conduct in Georgian journalism.

The 2025 EU Prize for Journalism was awarded in seven categories:

  • Best story in print or online media – Nino Tarkhnishvili,  Radio Liberty, entry;
  • Best feature story in broadcast or online media – Basti Mgaloblishvili, Publika, entry;
  • Best investigative story in print, online, or broadcast media – Studio Monitor, entry;
  • Best blog, opinion or column in print, online or broadcast media – Mindia Gabadze, Publika, entry;
  • The most innovative and original piece of work in print, broadcast or online media – Tamuna Chkareuli, Project 64, entry;
  • Best documentary photo reflecting shared values – Natia Leverashvili, Publika, entry;
  • Best Student work in print, online or broadcast media – Arsen Sebiskveradze, Medscriptum, entry.

Welcoming the participants of the annual prize-awarding event, EU Ambassador to Georgia Pawel Herczynski said the media environment in Georgia had significantly deteriorated in recent years.

“Independent media in Georgia face mounting pressure, shrinking resources, and an increasingly hostile legal environment. And yet, you continue to investigate, verify, and inform. This is not only a professional achievement – it is a service of profound value to Georgian society as a whole,” Pawel Herczynski said. “As long as journalists continue their work, people are not left in the dark. They remain connected to facts, context, and reality.”

The Ambassador shared a special thought about the jailed journalist Mzia Amaglobeli.

“Through unwavering integrity, she has stood firm in defence of freedom of expression, at enormous personal cost. As a recipient of the European Parliament’s Sakharov Prize, she embodies moral clarity and the conviction that journalism exists to serve the public—not power,” concluded Herczynski.
