Social rights, education and employment: EU Commissioner visits Moldova to discuss EU integration

Roxana Mînzatu, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission for Social Rights and Skills, Quality Jobs and Preparedness, is in the Republic of Moldova on 9 and 10 June for an official visit focused on social rights, education and employment.

On 9 June, she took part in the first EU-Moldova High-Level Dialogue on labour, skills, education, social and children’s policies. Discussions focused on investing in people and their potential through enhanced access to European initiatives in the field of education and training (Erasmus+, digitalisation, support for start-ups and capacity building for teachers etc.), EU support in creating decent jobs, strengthening institutions and integration into European cooperation networks, and the introduction of an inclusive child policy.

In Chisinau, Roxana Mînzatu also met  with President Maia Sandu and Prime Minister Dorin Recean. The meeting with the Prime Minister focused on the implementation of reforms under the social component of the Growth Plan for Moldova, which provides access to €241 million over the next three years for investment in education, social protection, labour, and health.

On 9 June, Roxana Mînzatu also took part in a ceremony for the handover of equipment to the National Employment Agency and in the launch of the renovation of the Boris Dînga Lyceum in Criuleni.

On 10 June, the Commissioner’s programme includes an open dialogue with students of the Technical University of Moldova and an event dedicated to European support for higher education within the Erasmus+ programme and the EVOLVE4GE project, an UN Women initiative aiming at combating violence, expanding opportunities for women, and promoting gender governance in Moldova.

The visit will conclude with a meeting with the Minister of Economic Development and Digitalisation, Doina Nistor.
