Moldovans give clear and strong mandate to President Sandu’s party, says EU

The people of Moldova have demonstrated their commitment to democracy and the rule of law, and have given a clear and strong mandate to the Party of Action and Solidarity to start implementing the ambitious agenda of President Maia Sandu, EU High Representative Josep Borrell and Commissioner Olivér Várhelyi said in a statement on the early parliamentary elections in Moldova. The elections took place on 11 July.

According to the preliminary findings and conclusions of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) Election Observation Mission, these elections were well administered, competitive and fundamental freedoms were largely respected.

However, says the statement, the ODIHR also noted shortcomings, throughout the campaign and on Election Day, notably the lack of effective campaign finance oversight, political bias displayed by the majority of monitored news outlets, lack of adequate legal framework to regulate electoral dispute resolution, and the handling of electoral complaints.

The EU is ready to support the Republic of Moldova in addressing the identified shortcomings,” says the statement. The EU now looks forward to working in partnership with a stable and strong government and parliament to address the challenges that the country is facing.

Borrell and Várhelyi underline that the recently announced ambitious Economic Recovery Plan for the Republic of Moldova as well as the Economic and Investment Plan for the Eastern Partnership will be important drivers to support the indispensable structural reforms, including in the key areas of justice and the fight against corruption, to stimulate long-term socio-economic development and recovery.
