On 22 May, representatives of the EU Delegation to Moldova joined German Ambassador Margret Uebber, Moldovan Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development Vladimir Bolea, and representatives of the German Development Bank KfW to visit the construction site of the new Wastewater Treatment Plant in Cahul, and areas of the city where the newly commissioned sewerage network is already in operation.
The Water Supply and Sanitation Project in Cahul, co-financed by Germany (€41.5 million grant) and the EU (€12.9 million grant), is one of the largest investments in the water sector in the Republic of Moldova. The new wastewater treatment plant, which will come on line later this year, will play a key role in improving public health, protecting the environment and enhancing living conditions for approximately 40,000 citizens of the Cahul region.
“The EU support for Cahul through this project means more than investments in infrastructure — it reflects care for the health, safety, and dignity of the people of Cahul Rayon,” said Magdalena Müller-Uri, Head of Cooperation at the EU Delegation to the Republic of Moldova. “Every household connected to clean drinking water and modern sanitation represents concrete progress toward a better life for the citizens here.”
Currently, 70% of the work has been completed and preparations are underway for the start of new construction work on the laying of water supply and sewerage networks in Crihana and Cotihana — the next stage of the project.
