On 2 October, Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili met in Brussels with European Council President Charles Michel and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

“As a candidate country, Georgia needs to deepen its reforms in line with our common democratic values,” Charles Michel wrote on X after the meeting. “Reforms, the rule of law, and democratic principles are at the core of the EU path.”

He added that a decision on Georgia’s future can only be made in Georgia by the Georgian people.

Ursula von der Leyen said she had great respect for Salome Zourabichvili’s commitment to Georgia’s European path.

“Our meeting comes at an important moment — the upcoming elections will be a crucial test for Georgia’s democracy. And a defining moment for the future of EU-Georgia relations,” Von der Leyen wrote on X.

In response, Zourabichvili said European moral support would be crucial “to ensure the Georgian people don’t feel isolated as they declare their European choice on October 26th”.
