G7 Non-Proliferation Directors Group to ramp up sanctions against Russia until ceasefire is reached

The G7 Non-Proliferation Directors Group, consisting of senior government officials from the G7 countries (Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States and the European Union) has condemned Russia’s continued brutal war against Ukraine and highlighted the need “for robust and credible security arrangements” to ensure that Ukraine can deter and defend against any continued aggression.

In a statement released on 21 August, the Group condemned the provision of all military assistance to Russia by the DPRK and Iran, and the provision of weapons and dual-use components by China, adding that it would continue to take action against those who support Russia’s war and the build-up of Russia’s military force.

The G7 Non-Proliferation Directors Group also said it remained committed to international efforts, most notably by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), to uphold nuclear safety and security in Ukraine, including at Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.

The officials also welcomed ongoing efforts to achieve a full and unconditional ceasefire and to negotiate a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace, but added: “So long as such a ceasefire is not reached, we will continue to explore all options, such as further ramping up sanctions against Russia.”

The G7 Non-Proliferation Directors Group is a collective of senior government officials from the G7 countries (Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States) that advances international peace and security through non-proliferation, arms control, and disarmament efforts. The group addresses challenges posed by weapons of mass destruction, conventional arms, and emerging technologies, issuing annual statements on these pressing global issues.
