The European Union last week paid a €13.5 million grant to the Armenian government as part of its €15 million budget support programme aimed at supporting the socio-economic integration of Karabakh Armenians.
The programme ‘State and Resilience Building Contract for the Republic of Armenia’ aims to support the Armenian government in addressing the short-and medium-term needs of refugees. This includes enabling their long-term socio-economic integration, ensuring inclusion in the Armenian education, social protection and healthcare systems, and integration into the labour market.
Last week, the Armenian government also received a final disbursement of €3.51 million within the €27 million programme on ‘Support for Justice Sector Reforms in Armenia Phase I’. The programme aims to support Armenia’s justice sector reform process in line with the country’s commitments under the Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement (CEPA), the EU’s best practices, and the recommendations stemming from the EU-Armenia Strategic Policy Dialogue in the Justice sector.
“The payment marks an important step in terms of recognition of progress in the justice sector reform agenda – improved accountability and integrity, in particular through the continuation of integrity checks for judges and prosecutors, improved anti-corruption framework via establishment of Anti-corruption court and appointment of specialised judges, as well as introduction of new selection, appointment and evaluation and procedures for judges in line with the European standards,” says a Facebook post by the EU Delegation to Armenia.
