EU: If there is no progress in Georgia, full visa suspension may follow

The EU Delegation to Georgia last Friday published a Facebook post regarding the visa suspension mechanism, reminding that “if there is no progress, full visa suspension may follow”.

The post says that visa-free travel depends on upholding fundamental rights and freedoms and that the latest European Commission report raised concerns about human rights in Georgia. In January 2025, visa-free travel for diplomatic and service passports was suspended.

To avoid the full visa suspension regime, the EU recommends to conduct key reforms with focus on protecting rights and strengthening anti-corruption efforts. The full list of recommendations is available here.

According to the EU Delegation to Georgia, the EU is expected to publish an update on this issue by the end of August.
