EU and UNDP support expansion of waste management and recycling infrastructure in Moldova

Five recycling companies in the Republic of Moldova will receive support totaling up to €425,000 to develop their waste management and recycling activities. The assistance is provided by the European Union and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) as part of the project ‘Enabling inclusive green transition in the Republic of Moldova’.

The selected companies will receive equipment, services, and specialised technical assistance worth up to €85,000 each. All of this will contribute to the creation of new recycling facilities, the modernisation and expansion of existing capacities, the implementation of technical solutions to reduce environmental impact, and the development of digital systems and IT solutions dedicated to waste management.

“Moldova’s economic growth is closely tied to natural resources, from agriculture to energy. Yet, climate change, pollution and inefficient resource use threaten this foundation,” said Adam Grodzicki, Deputy Head of Cooperation, European Union Delegation to the Republic of Moldova. “The cost of inaction is important. Conversely, the opportunities of action are substantial. The circular economy can create jobs, reduce dependency on imports, and attract investment, all while protecting the environment.”

“For our company, the investment enabled by the UNDP–EU project represents more than just the modernisation of equipment. It will allow us to expand our processing capacity and strengthen our contribution to the collection, recycling, and recovery of plastic waste in the municipality of Bălți and the northern region of the Republic of Moldova,” said Ion Zaiaț, the manager of a recycling company.

The EU-funded project ‘Enabling inclusive green transition in the Republic of Moldova’, implemented by UNDP, supports the Government of Moldova to engage sustainably in a transformative green agenda by enhancing awareness, building capacities, and encouraging investments in low-emission and resource-efficient economies.
