EU and its Member States extend their congratulations to Georgia on Independence Day

On Georgia’s independence day, celebrated today, the EU Delegation to Georgia and EU Member States’ Embassies reaffirmed the EU’s “steadfast support” for Georgia’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders.

On 26 May 1918, Georgia adopted the Act of Independence, which established the Democratic Republic of Georgia in the aftermath of the Russian Revolution of 1917.

In a statement released today, the EU Delegation to Georgia and EU Member States’ Embassies said that on 26 May 1918 Georgia affirmed “its vision for a sovereign and democratic statehood”.

“Today, the spirit of the independence declaration deeply resonates within Georgian society,” the statement reads. “Georgia’s history has demonstrated enduring aspiration for stronger ties with Europe. Over the past three decades, the European Union and its Member States have stood alongside Georgia, and remain a reliable, long-term partner.”

The statement adds that progress on democratic reforms, the rule of law, and the protection of fundamental freedoms “remain essential for advancing on the European path”.
