The European Union is contributing €75 million in grant funding towards the reconstruction of Chornobyl’s New Safe Confinement (NSC).
The announcement was made yesterday by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen at the G7 Summit in Évian, as part of international pledging efforts to support this critical nuclear safety structure.
The NSC shields the remains of Reactor No. 4 – the source of the 1986 catastrophe – protecting people and the environment from radiation for generations to come.
Earlier in June, the EU Delegation to Ukraine visited the NSC together with the representatives of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) to see at first hand the current state of the structure.
