On 27 March, during a visit to Chisinau, Michael McGrath, the European Commissioner for Democracy, Justice, the Rule of Law and Consumer Protection, announced additional EU support for the Republic of Moldova.
The new funding includes €5 million to extend support for the ongoing vetting process of judges, and €4 million for a new e-justice project aimed at accelerating the digitalisation of the justice system.
“These measures will contribute to strengthening the integrity of the judiciary, modernising services, and increasing public trust in the justice system,” the EU Delegation to Moldova posted on X.
Michael McGrath welcomed the significant progress made by the Republic of Moldova in the EU accession process, including the opening of technical negotiations across all six clusters of the EU acquis.
The commissioner met Moldovan President Maia Sandu, Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu, and Deputy Prime Minister Cristina Gherasimov. He also met with representatives of civil society and key institutions in the justice sector, including the National Institute of Justice (NIJ), the Constitutional Court, the Vetting Commission and the Superior Council of Magistracy, to discuss reforms in the justice sector.
