#Cashless: EU supports campaign launched by National Bank of Ukraine

The European Union, through its #EUFINREG project, is supporting the all-Ukrainian #Cashless information campaign launched by the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU). The campaign is a part of the Roadmap of the National Bank of Ukraine for the Development of the Cashless Economy until 2025 and aims to promote non-cash payments.

The campaign should help the general public, especially elderly people, to understand how to open an account, what types of cards exist, what online banking and cardless payments are, how to pay with a smartphone and how to guard against fraudsters. According to the National Bank of Ukraine, older people, especially those outside Ukraine’s big cities, need special support in building trust and learning how to pay without cash.

A survey conducted by the NBU in 2020 says that 76% of Ukrainians used payment cards, but only 21% used online banking. As a comparison, the average number of online banking users in the EU Member States reached 63% this year (Eurostat data). The leaders are Finland (94%), the Netherlands (89%) and Sweden (87%).
