Armenia: renewed House of Culture opens in Alaverdi as part of M4EG initiative

On 26 November, a renewed House of Culture was opened in Alaverdi, Armenia, with EU support.

The Alaverdi House of Culture, dormant for many years, has been transformed into a space for concerts, theatrical performances, film screenings, official meetings, and community events. The venue will also host the Lori International Theatre Festival, further enhancing the region’s cultural life.

“The European Union is proud to support initiatives that foster local development and cultural renewal,” said Vassilis Maragos, EU Ambassador to Armenia. “For the EU investing in cultural spaces means investing in people — especially in youth, talent, and future opportunities. The transformation of the Alaverdi House of Culture demonstrates the power of collaboration between local authorities, international partners, and the community residents.”

During the visit to Alaverdi, Ambassador Maragos also met with representatives of Alaverdi’s Greek community, appreciating their long-standing cultural heritage.

The renovation was made possible through the collaborative efforts and co-financing of the Government of Armenia, Alaverdi Municipality, the EU-funded ‘Mayors for Economic Growth’ (M4EG) Facility implemented by UNDP, and the ‘Strengthening community stability through energy efficiency and low-emission development’ project, financed by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) and implemented by UNDP.
