Ukraine to receive €100 million from EU for reconstruction of electricity transmission system

On 18 July, the National Ukrainian Power Company ‘Ukrenergo’ successfully reached a €100 million grant agreement with KfW, the German state-owned investment and development bank. 

This funding will be provided by the European Commission under the Ukraine Investment Framework (UIF), part of the Ukraine facility. It will support the ‘Reconstruction and Restoration of Ukraine’s Electricity Transmission Infrastructure II’ project.

“Russia cannot win on the battlefield, so they’re destroying our energy infrastructure,” said Roman Andarak, Deputy Minister of Energy of Ukraine. “Massive enemy attacks led to significant losses of both generating capacities and facilities of the electricity transmission system.”

In particular, the project provides for the reconstruction, repair, rehabilitation and replacement of destroyed and/or damaged parts of Ukraine’s electricity transmission infrastructure and equipment, construction of new substations and transmission lines using modern and energy efficient technologies, as well as measures for the physical protection of electricity transmission infrastructure elements.

“Ensuring a stable power supply for the people of Ukraine is a top priority for the EU,” Stefan Schleuning, Head of Cooperation at the Delegation of the European Union to Ukraine, said. “Preserving every megawatt in the system is critical, and the EU is pleased to contribute to the retrofitting and recovery of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.”
