Ukraine: Russian Chargé d’affaires to the EU summoned by European External Action Service

Michael Siebert, Managing Director of the European External Action Service (EEAS) for Russia, Eastern Partnership, Central Asia, Regional Cooperation and OSCE, summoned Kirill Logvinov, Chargé d’affaires of the Russian Mission to the European Union, in Brussels on 3 October.

The EU expressed its firm rejection and strongest condemnation of Russia’s illegal annexation of the Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk and Zaporizhzhia regions of Ukraine following illegal sham “referenda” held by Russia at the end of September.

“The EU does not and will never recognise this illegal annexation by Russia. These Russian decisions are null and void and cannot have any legal effect,” said Siebert.

He once again called on Russia to renounce this illegal act and to immediately, fully and unconditionally withdraw all its troops and military equipment from the entire territory of Ukraine. Michael Siebert recalled the EU’s unwavering support for Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders.

The  summoning was part of coordinated EEAS action by all EU member states in response to Russia’s latest escalation of aggression against Ukraine.
