Ukraine Energy Support Fund: United Kingdom increases its contribution to €179 million

On 16 January, the United Kingdom announced a new contribution of €11.5 million to the Ukraine Energy Support Fund, increasing its total support to approximately €179 million.

The Ukraine Energy Support Fund (UESF) was established in 2022 in agreement with the European Commission and the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine to counteract the impact of the Russian attacks targeting critical energy infrastructure. The UESF is managed by the Energy Community Secretariat, co-chaired by the European Commission.

“The United Kingdom’s new contribution is fundamental to the Fund’s ability to deliver rapid assistance in a fast-evolving energy crisis,” said Artur Lorkowski, Director of the Energy Community Secretariat.

“The contribution comes during one of the coldest winter periods since the start of the full-scale war, when sustained Russian aggression has pushed Kyiv and cities across Ukraine into states of emergency,” the Secretariat said in a press release.

The donation will support a balanced package of priority measures, including emergency network repairs to maintain heat and power for millions of Ukrainians and the protection of critical energy infrastructure.

Since its launch in spring 2022, the Fund has received contributions from 36 donors, mobilising over €1.6 billion of signed contributions. To date, more than 1,000 supply contracts have been concluded, worth over €800 million. Over €550 million worth of essential energy equipment, services and passive protection measures have been delivered.

Despite the growing number of new donors and continued support from existing partners, the Fund currently faces a financial gap of approximately €387  million.
