Top EU officials meet exiled Belarusian opposition leader Tsihanouskaya

On 10 February, European Council President Antonio Costa and European Parliament President Roberta Metsola met with exiled Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana Tsihanouskaya.

Posting on X after the meeting, Antonio Costa called Tsihanouskaya “a symbol of courage and hope”

“We need to continue supporting democratic forces in Belarus. Lukashenko’s regime is a threat to peace in Ukraine and security in Europe,” said Costa.

“Good to get back together today following the sham election in Belarus and renew the European Parliament’s strong commitment to the democratic forces of Belarus,” Roberta Metsola said on X after the meeting with Tsihanouskaya.

In her turn, the Belarusian opposition leader thanked Costa and Metsola for their support, saying that “the fight for democracy in Belarus is key to European security” and that Belarusians continue to resist Lukashenko’s regime.

“We need the world to stand with us,” Tsihanouskaya wrote on X.
