Modern DNA laboratory to strengthen Moldovan law enforcement as part of EU-funded project  

Last December, a modern forensic DNA laboratory was established at the Technical-Criminalistic and Forensic Expertise Center of Moldova’s General Inspectorate of Police. The examinations being done at the newly operationalised laboratory contribute to crime investigations when analysing biological evidence collected from crime scenes.

The Central Project Management Agency (CPVA, Lithuania), as part of the EU4REFORMS-DNA project, supplied the laboratory with missing DNA equipment and trained Moldovan specialists. The €1 million project, running from 2023 to 2025, is funded by the European Union. 

As part of this project, CPVA organised a series of 10 practical seminars and training sessions, each lasting one to two weeks, held in both Lithuania and Moldova. These sessions provided Moldovan specialists with the skills and knowledge necessary for effective DNA analysis.

Following international standards, the laboratory will seek the accreditation of examinations under ISO 17025, enabling Moldova to exchange DNA data with EU member states once it joins the EU. It will help in solving complex crimes, improving detection rates, reducing crime and establishing a national DNA database – an essential tool for law enforcement.

“Modern DNA technology is more than a tool for crime investigation. It fosters collaboration in law enforcement, builds mutual trust and enhances regional security,” said Tomas Butrimas, the project’s key expert.
