“The EU wants to press ahead to get Moldova into the Union,” EU High Representative Kaja Kallas said in Chisinau, while travelling to Moldova on 7-8 May.
Kallas met with President Maia Sandu, Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu, Defence Minister Anatolie Nosatîi, and Foreign Minister Mihai Popșoi.
Kallas praised “the remarkable progress” made by Moldova on the European path, and assured that “Transnistria will not become an obstacle to Moldova’s European future”.
She said the EU would soon hold a second EU-Moldova summit in Brussels.
Kaja Kallas also announced the delivery to Moldova of a new EU-funded radar system. “It will help provide better detection of Russian drones. And these examples show the practical value of our partnership. A stronger, more secure Moldova, better able to protect its citizens,” Kallas said.
The EU High Representative said the EU had already provided €200 million worth of assistance through the European Peace Facility (EPF). The latest batch of equipment was delivered to Moldova on 7 May.
“I will also propose to Member States to double the EPF funding to €120 million annually. This would be the largest ever EPF assistance measure for any beneficiary country after Ukraine,” Kallas said.
On 8 May, Kallas and Sand jointly opened the EuroQuiz initiative with a group of students.
