European Union to speed up work on Ukraine’s EU accession, top EU officials say at Munich conference

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and President of the European Council António Costa met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Munich on 14 February.

President von der Leyen and President Costa committed to a continued and stable support to Ukraine until a just, comprehensive and lasting peace is reached.

They said that only such a peace would lead to a sovereign and prosperous Ukraine and guarantee Ukraine’s and Europe’s security.

They also expressed the willingness to put Ukraine in a position of strength ahead of any future negotiations and ensure that Ukraine is provided with strong security guarantees.

The top EU officials stressed the need for Europeans to increase their defence spending and strengthen their defence capabilities and help to reinforce the Ukrainian armed forces.

In his X account, Antonio Costa wrote after the meeting: “We are together with you since the beginning of the war. We will remain with you now and in the future negotiations, in reconstruction, in the accession process and as a member of the EU.”

“We will keep providing continued and stable support to Ukraine. And speed up work on your EU accession,” Ursula von der Leyen posted on X.
