EU will not recognise Russian-held elections in occupied Ukrainian territories

On 13 September, the Lead Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy of the European Union External Action Service (EEAS), Anitta Hipper, repeated that the EU did not recognise any elections organised by Russian authorities on occupied Ukrainian territories.

The EU Spokesperson said: “The EU does not recognise either the so-called “elections” or their results in the occupied territory.” She added that this was, “another violation of international law, including the UN Charter and Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity”.

Hipper’s statement said the EU continued to consider Crimea as a part of Ukraine and expressed the EU’s unwavering support for Ukraine in its efforts to resist Russia’s war of aggression.

On 14 September, Russian authorities will hold regional and local elections, including in the illegally annexed Crimea, namely the city of Sevastopol.
