EU welcomes release of 250 political prisoners in Belarus: ‘Tangible step forward’

EU High Representative Kaja Kallas has welcomed the release of 250 political prisoners in Belarus on 19 March, saying it was a “tangible step forward”.

She also thanked the United States for “brokering this deal”.

“For many families, this is a moment of long-awaited relief and a chance to reunite with their loved ones,” Kallas said. “We can’t overlook that these individuals should never have been imprisoned in the first place.”

She added that “all those still unjustly detained in Belarus must be freed, and repression must end”.
