EU welcomes new release of Belarusian political prisoners

EU High Representative Kaja Kallas has welcomed the release of Ales Bialiatski, Maria Kalesnikava, Maksim Znak and 120 others from Belarusian prisons. They were released on 13 December and left Belarus towards Ukraine and Lithuania.

“I share the joy of their families and friends. Credit goes to the US for making this possible,” Kaja Kallas posed on X.  “Now, all those who remain unjustly detained must be released.”

On 9 December, the European Union announced a new package for the people of Belarus. Developed in close consultation with Belarusian democratic forces and civil society, the new package will assist, among others, victims of repression.
