EU ministers welcome plan to create solidarity channels facilitating food export from Ukraine

The Agriculture and Fisheries Council on 24 May has welcomed the European Commission’s action plan on EU-Ukraine solidarity channels.

Ministers were briefed by the Commission on EU-Ukraine solidarity channels to facilitate exports of Ukrainian agricultural products by land to European and global markets.

This action plan aims to overcome Russia’s blockade of Ukrainian Black Sea ports and ensure Ukraine’s full integration into world agricultural markets and continued contribution to global food security. Alternative transport routes and supply chains between the EU and Ukraine would allow Ukraine to export, and would free up storage capacity in Ukraine for future harvests.

It would also help to alleviate quantitative and price pressures on markets. “This can be achieved through cooperation between the Commission, Member States, Ukrainian authorities, EU and Ukrainian transport operators, infrastructure managers, rolling stock, ship and vehicle owners, international financial institutions and all other stakeholders in the region,” said the press release by the Council of the European Union.
