EU Foreign Affairs Council to discuss 20th package of sanctions

Ahead of the fourth anniversary of the Russian full-scale war against Ukraine, the EU Foreign Affairs Council will today discuss the 20th sanctions package against Russia and the €90 billion package to support Ukraine, EU High Representative Kaja Kallas told journalists upon arrival.

Regarding the sanctions, “there is not going to be progress today”, Kaja Kallas said, adding: “But we will definitely make this push.”

“As we have heard some very strong statements from Hungary, that is why I do not really see that they are going to change this unfortunately today, this position that they have,” Kallas noted.

Regarding the €90 billion package, she was also uncertain, saying “let us see how that works out”.

Commenting on US Envoy Steven Witoff’s efforts around peace talks, Kaja Kallas said: “Looking at the signs, I do not share this optimism, because the negotiators on the Russian side are not really serious, and they are not willing to talk about anything political.”

She added that if Ukraine would be pushed to give up, this would not bring long-term peace.
