EU Commissioner Kos visits Ukraine to support EU accession reforms

European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos arrived in Kyiv on 8 June. Her visit focused on supporting Ukraine’s EU accession reforms, wartime recovery, and the strengthening of political and societal support for European integration.

Commissioner Kos met with Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko and senior members of the government to discuss reform progress and EU support priorities, including preparedness for the coming winter.

Commissioner Kos also held meetings with the Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada, Ruslan Stefanchuk, Deputy Speaker Oleksandr Korniyenko, chairs of parliamentary committees, and leaders of political factions to stress the importance of maintaining broad political consensus on EU-related reforms.

“Ukraine is about to take one of the most important steps yet on its EU path, as formal membership negotiations are set to begin,” Marta Kos posted on X. “I’m here in Kyiv, discussing… how to use the opening of the first cluster to build on the reforms that have already been done and further accelerate Ukraine’s trajectory to the EU.”

In Kyiv, Marta Kos also visited the sites of the most recent Russian attacks and laid flowers to remember the people whose lives were destroyed by “Moscow’s senseless war”.

“Witnessing the abominable destruction Russia is causing in Ukraine once again. The closer Ukraine comes to the EU, the more desperate Russia becomes. And with that desperation come more threats, more missiles and more attacks,” Marta Kos posted on X. “I want to be clear that Europe’s support will not be shaken. Ukraine belongs in the European Union.”

The Commissioner will deliver a keynote speech at the public event on ‘Ukraine’s Accession: How to Deliver Europe’s Next Enlargement’ and meet with women leaders to discuss how women are shaping the political landscape.
