Antonio Costa: EU will continue to support Georgian people’s European future

Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili said on X last night that she had discussed the latest developments in Georgia with the President of the European Council António Costa.

“I underlined the only peaceful way out of the crisis was political, through new elections! I was assured that the EU will continue to support the Georgian people and their European future,” Salome Zourabichvili said in a post re-posted by António Costa.

On Saturday 14 December, the Georgian Electoral College, which mainly consists of members of the ruling Georgian Dream Party, elected Mikheil Kavelashvili, the party’s candidate, as President of the country. He was the only candidate for the election.

The Standing Rapporteur of the European Parliament for Georgia, Member of the European Parliament Rasa Juknevičienė, wrote on X that Salome Zourabichvili remains “the only legitimate official in Georgia, /…/ elected as a result of free elections.”

“There were no real elections in Georgia today. What took place was a farce — just like in Russia, Belarus, and other autocracies,” said Juknevičienė. “Ivanishvili continues the state capture.”
