Senior EU officials visit Chisinau: EU-Moldova relations in focus

A high-level delegation of EU officials is in the Republic of Moldova from 13 to 15 September, with the participation of Katarína Mathernová, Deputy Director-General for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Negotiations at the European Commission, and Michael Siebert, Managing Director for Russia, Eastern Partnership, Central Asia, Regional cooperation and OSCE at the European External Action Service. 

The aim of the visit is to discuss EU-Moldova relations and prospects for their further enhancement in the framework of the EU-Republic of Moldova Association Agreement and its Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area.

The EU officials met President Maia Sandu, the Speaker of Parliament, the Prime Minister, as well as key representatives of the Moldovan government, International Financial Institutions and civil society. They spoked about the priorities of the reform agenda, in particular in justice reform, the preparations for the Eastern Partnership summit at the end of the year, and Transnistrian conflict settlement.

The officials also discussed the Economic Recovery Plan for Moldova, under which the EU will support Moldova with €600 million over the next three years.

“Now, the first measures under the Economic Recovery Plan will shortly materialise, with the expected disbursement of €36 million in grant money under budget support programmes to support the authorities’ efforts to fight against the consequences of the pandemic. Moldova can count on the EU’s assistance on its path to reforms and to recovery, bringing tangible results to citizens,” said Katarína Mathernová.
