Refugee crisis: EU to mobilise immediate €15 million support and additional €5 million in civil protection aid to Moldova

March 3, 2022

The EU will mobilise an immediate support of €15 million and an additional €5 million in civil protection aid to Moldova. This assistance should help the Moldovan authorities to provide all the help that refugees fleeing from Ukraine need.

This was announced today during the second day of European Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Olivér Várhelyi and EU High Representative Josep Borrell’s visit to Moldova.

We have seen many children and women, very young children, newborn babies, and it is shocking to see, also the horror and the shock in their eyes. We need to immediately stop this war [in Ukraine]. There is no reason anytime, anywhere for a war,” said Várhelyi.

He added that “Moldova is doing its utmost, I would say even beyond its power, and we need to help them”.

On 2 and 3 March, Borrell and Várhelyi met with President Maia Sandu, with Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilița and Deputy Prime Minister/Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, Nicu Popescu.
