Michel in Chisinau: EU to provide additional military equipment to Moldova

The EU plans to significantly increase its support for Moldova this year by providing its armed forces with additional military equipment. European Council President Charles Michel declared this during a joint press conference with Moldovan President Maia Sandu in Chișinău.

This is the defining moment for Europe and Moldova that was particularly impacted by the Russian aggression against Ukraine. It is our European duty to help Moldova and to increase support to your stability, security, territorial integrity and sovereignty,” said Michel.

He reminded that last year the EU provided Moldova with €7 million worth of equipment, medical and engineering support for the Moldovan army under the European Peace Facility programme. He added that the EU would help Moldova strengthen its resilience and cope with the consequences of the spill-over from Russia’s aggression in Ukraine by providing additional military equipment and helping to counter disinformation and to withstand cyber-attacks.

Maia Sandu said that Moldova appreciates the solidarity and assistance provided by the EU, including for managing the flow of refugees.

Sandu also said that Moldova hoped the EU would open its market to Moldovan fruits and other commodities that can no longer be exported to Eastern markets. “It would be a huge support to our entrepreneurs affected by the war,” said Sandu.

Sandu added that Moldova would soon complete the second part of the EU questionnaire that is part of the EU accession process, and that Moldova hoped to get a positive opinion from the European Union institutions on the country’s accession application.

The process of European integration is complex and long lasting. We understand this, we don’t look for shortcuts or concessions on procedures. But we want to provide our citizens as soon as possible the future they deserve,” said Sandu.
