Georgian writer wins 2022 European Union Prize for Literature


The Georgian writer Iva Pezuashvili has won the 2022 European Union Prize for Literature for his book A Garbage Chute. The jury also gave a special mention to Ukrainian writer Eugenia Kuznetsova for her book Ask Miyechka, as well as to writers from Bosnia Herzegovina, Belgium, Spain, and Ireland.

The nominees for 2022 came from 14 different countries.

Iva Pezuashvili, born in 1990, graduated from Shota Rustaveli State University of Theatre and Film, Georgia, with a major in Feature Film Directing. He has made several television documentaries. Since 2014, he has been working as a scriptwriter for the TV series Tbilisi. In the same year, Intellect publishing house published his first book I Tried. In 2020, his novel A Garbage Chute was awarded the Tsinandali Prize.

The European Union Prize for Literature has since 2009 recognised emerging fiction writers from the European Union and beyond. The Prize celebrates outstanding new literary talents from all the 41 countries participating in the EU’s Creative Europe programme.

Spotlighting the creativity and the immense and diverse wealth of Europe’s contemporary literature in the field of fiction, the award aims to promote the circulation of literature within Europe and encourage greater interest in non-national literary works.
