Borrell meets senior Moldovan officials

On 27 September, EU High Representative Josep Borrell met Moldovan Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilita and Foreign Minister Nicu Popescu.

They discussed the prospects for enhancing cooperation between the EU and Moldova, especially around security and defence.

Borrell said after the meeting that the EU and Moldova had agreed to relaunch bilateral consultations to identify more concrete areas for further cooperation in the security area.

Touching on the settlement of the Transnistrian conflict, Borrell reminded that the EU continues being ready to facilitate a comprehensive, peaceful and sustainable settlement process on the basis of respect for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Republic of Moldova, within its internationally recognised borders, with a special status for Transnistria.

Both sides agreed to discuss these and other areas of cooperation at the upcoming European Union-Moldova Association Council, which is scheduled for the end of October.
