Rapper from Ukraine wins Music Moves Europe Talent Award co-funded by Creative Europe

A Ukrainian rapper is among the eight winners of the Music Moves Europe Talent Awards, co-funded by Creative Europe, the EU programme for the culture and audiovisual sectors, revealed at the digital award ceremony of the Eurosonic Noorderslag festival on 15 January. Rapper Alyona Alyona was not only one of the eight winners of the contest, but also won the Public Choice Award.

Alyona Alyona is the stage name of Alyona Savranenko, a former kindergarten teacher, who became a rap star in Ukraine. Her debut album Ribki (or Fischlein, a synonym for young women) is about women like Alyona who are not accepted by society. The song from this album ‘Salischaju swij dim’ (‘I leave my house’) has become an unofficial anthem for the many who want to move away from their traditional life to a better future.

During the Eurosonic Noorderslag festival, the public had the opportunity to discover Alyona’s and other singers’ talents as part of the showcase programme, presented as an online event this year.

The EU prize for popular and contemporary music supports new emerging talents all over Europe with a substantial prize package worth €10,000 to boost their international career. In addition, the Public Choice winner receives an additional prize of €5,000.

Creative Europe, the flagship European instrument in support of the cultural and creative sectors, this year celebrates its 30th anniversary. The new programme for 2021-2027 will continue to promote cultural and linguistic diversity, heritage and competitiveness, and will allow cultural and creative organisations and professionals to co-create and cooperate across borders and to reach wider audiences, tackling current societal questions and supporting emerging artists.
